RETURNING TO WORK WHILE BREASTFEEDING — A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR THE REAL WORLD

Her maternity leave was ending in two weeks. The nursery was set up. Childcare was arranged. And somewhere in the back of her mind, a question kept surfacing that she had not quite faced yet:

Where am I going to pump at work?

Returning to work while breastfeeding is one of the most practically complex transitions a nursing mama can navigate. And yet most workplaces — and most maternity leave preparations — do not give it nearly enough attention.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

First, the foundation: in the United States, the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act requires most employers to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for employees to express milk. You have legal protections. Know them before you go back.

That said, having the right and having the reality enforced are two different things. Come prepared with the information and be ready to advocate for yourself.

BUILDING YOUR PUMPING SCHEDULE

Generally speaking, you want to pump as often at work as your baby is nursing at home. If your baby nurses every 2-3 hours, you are aiming for 2-3 pumping sessions during your workday. Consistency is key — gaps in pumping signal your body to reduce supply.

Plan your sessions into your calendar like meetings. Because they are. Your supply depends on it.

THE EMOTIONAL PIECE

Returning to work while breastfeeding carries an emotional weight that does not always get acknowledged. There can be grief around leaving your baby. Guilt about pumping less than nursing. Stress about output dropping. Frustration when your workplace is not as accommodating as the law says it should be.

All of that is real. And you do not have to manage it alone.

FOR EMPLOYERS AND HR TEAMS

If you are an employer reading this — lactation support is not just a benefit. It is a retention strategy. Mamas who feel supported in their feeding goals are more likely to return to work with full engagement and loyalty.

We offer corporate lactation wellness programming for organizations who want to do right by their returning employees. Share this post with your HR team — and reach out at the link in bio.
